Big picture Question
What lasting legacies of early modern globalization are evident in the twenty-first century? Pay particular attention to the legacies of the slave trade.
Our present global economy is similar to lasting legacies. We continue to depend and value items from across the globe. Yet, our lives are very different than theirs and obviously have changed dramatically. Long distance trade continues to be the case even though we may not appreciate as many of the items are always available such as spices and textiles, silver and gold items, sugar and salt. Early modern globalization is different from what we have today due to the fact that it was based on pre-industrial capacity. They relied mainly on human and animal muscle, wind and water (p. 632). In addition, it was closely connected to empire building and slavery, which were not longer accepted in the late twentieth century. In the twenty-first century the global economy can function well without those practices.
