Why do you think that this Mughal painter portrayed Mary and Joseph as rather distinguished and educated persons rather than as the humble carpenter and his peasant wife, as in so many European images? Why might he have placed the family in rather palatial surroundings instead of a stable?


The painter Mughal portrayed Mary and Joseph as distinguished and educated people because they valued more than anything artistic achievements of European civilization. In addition, he valued the art of late Renaissance Europe. Besides Mughal did not have any intention to convert to Christianity so he did not care that Mary and Joseph were portrayed as the original Christian symbolic figures that they were. Not only he was committed to Islam, but also European religious art served as a propaganda value in enhancing their
status.
